Brown-headed Barbet entering its nest, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

This Barbet couple built their nest in the hole of  a 'Veralu' tree and 3 yong ones  came out and flew away. This couple was prevented from using the earlier nest by a very aggressive couple of  'Mynahs', who subsequently laid  eggs  there and brought up their brood of young ones. The Barbet couple found a hole in the same 'Veralu tree and have prepared this place for the second brood.

'Brown-headed Barbet' - Megalaima zeylanica, Home garden, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

The noisiest bird in the jungles of Sri Lanka. The older generation of bird-watchers could never get a bird-song recorded without the cry of this bird creeping into the audio-recording.

Brown-headed Barbet - Megalaima zeylanica, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

The loudest bird in the garden. Makes its loud cry from a tree close by. When it descends to eat the fruits offered it is very silent. It is off in a jiffy if it catches sight of a human closeby.
