Indian Pitta - Pitta brachyura, Doctors quarters, BH, Avissawella, Sri Lanka, Dr. Eranga Perera.

This photo was taken by Dr. Eranga Perera, Consultant Surgeon, Base Hospital, Avissawella. The bird was in the back-garden of his quarters. The cry of this bird resembles like saying 'maatch kiyang'. The villagers in Sri Lanka have a story as follows:-
The 'Avichchiya' as the bird is called in Sinhalese, was the most beautiful bird in creation. The Pea-cock was literally naked and ugly. The Pea-cock wanted to go for a party of the birds and borrowed the beautiful feathers of the' Avichcha', who was  rather shy and avoided parties. The Pea-cock never returned the feathers. The now rather naked  'Avichchiya' is in hiding, but keeps shouting 'maath kiyang' meaning in Sinhalese, 'I will take you before the judges'.
It is a rather beautiful bird but very shy. We are alerted to its presence by its call early in the morning, when it raids the kitchen refuse, in the back garden.

'Free ranging' cock and hen, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

Cock-fighting was a village sport in South Asia for centuries. Prize fighting cocks were much sought after. See the well developed fighting spurs on this cock, whose ancestry might be anywhere in South Asia.

Birds in a pond, Nallur, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

In close proximity to the Nallur Temple is the Rio Ice-cream Bar. There is a weed grown algae covered pond. It is an area with a lot of traffic close by. I spotted these birds in the pond feeding and nesting.

Grey Heron - Andea cineria, Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka.

Wading and feeding in a water reservoir in the Park this burd had its plumage ruffled by the strong breeze present in the vicinity. I took these pictures using a Nikon D90 with a Nikon D zoom lens 70-300 from a stopped vehicle using VR on. I took the shot 'hand-held'.

'Malabar Pied Horn-bill' - Anthracoceros coronatus, Katharagama, Sri Lanka.

I spotted this on the bank of the 'Menik Ganga' near the Katharagama Holy Shrine. I saw a similar or was it the same pair at Sithulpawwa a few hours earlier.
